Permission to Play in Your Bible

What if playing in our Bibles, if drawing, adding in bits and pieces of paper, taping in a page for more room, was not defacing something sacred but appreciating it? What if taking time to engage and play in and sit with the Word in a way that makes it personal and stirs something in us could be worship?

People are Not Deplorable

I saw a headline recently that read, “Clinton got it right when she called them deplorables, and she was being polite.” And my first response was, “And God still loves those people. They are not deplorable to Him.”

Go and Do Likewise

Once, a group from the South was on their way to D.C. to protest the recently passed voter laws. In the southern part of Virginia, they ran into car troubles and ended up stranded on the highway at dusk. They were clad in t-shirts that said to “protect voting rights” and with the names of... The Weight of Memory

The Weight of Memory is a book you fall into and enjoy the opportunity to swim around and get immersed in. Here's to a writer that does not shy away from hard questions and keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

Welcoming the Overlooked

Jesus was having a very bad day. After spending almost three years with this rag tag group of men, in a matter of moments, they revealed to him they still had no idea what He was about. Let Her Have a Word

I thought this book would bring these women to life, perhaps (finally) giving them a voice versus allowing us only to behold them through the lens of a man. Alas, it is not even her words that are being held up, but a man’s view of her (both in the write-up and the poems themselves).

The Things Love Is Not

In the middle of Paul’s list of love there are three statements which, at first, can seem out of place. It is a list of things that love does not do. The root of these three actions is pride, something that has no place in love.

There is No Unity Without Accountability

To bully, hurt, oppress, disregard, overstep, seek to erase other people and then turn around and tell those same people that to hold you accountable is divisive is laughable and wrong. It is a tone-deaf plea from a group that has spent its entire history being abusive towards people who do not think, act, worship, or look like them. It is an entitled demand from people used to getting their way.

Love is Not Self-Seeking

Ultimately, Jesus said, His believers are known by their love. He said the greatest thing we can do is love God and love our neighbor. To love is to lay down our preferences, what we think we are owed, our comfort, and yes, our “rights.”
